Heating & cooling · Radiant floors

Radiant floor heating in Kansas City, planned before the slab.

Hydronic radiant floors circulate warm water through tubing in the slab, so the floor itself heats the room: quiet, even heat with no air blowing. GeothermalKC plans & installs radiant systems for new homes, barndominiums, shops & garages, with the boiler, manifold & controls that run them.

Plan it before the slab

Radiant tubing, under slab insulation & the manifold location are set before the pour, so the decisions come early: which areas get radiant heat, how the slab is zoned & where the heat source goes.

Shops, garages & barndominiums suit radiant slabs: heat stays near the floor where people work, opening an overhead door costs less heat, & a warm slab dries quickly. Radiant floors heat but do not cool, so cooling comes from ductwork or mini splits.

HVAC & plumbing work is contracted & licensed through GeothermalKC, for homes & new buildings across the Kansas City metro & surrounding counties.

What the work includes

  • Zoning & tubing layout for the slab
  • Under slab insulation plan for the builder
  • Tubing placed & pressure tested before the pour
  • Manifolds, pumps & controls
  • Boiler heat source & connections
  • Start up & balancing

How a radiant project runs

  1. Plans stage

Zones, the heat source & the mechanical room are settled with the builder.

  2. Before the pour

Insulation & tubing go down & the tubing is pressure tested.

  3. The pour

The slab is poured with the tubing under pressure.

  4. Mechanical room

Boiler, manifold, pumps & controls are installed.

  5. Start up

The system is filled, started & balanced.

Typical projects & exclusions

Typical projects

  • New homes on slab
  • Barndominiums & shops
  • Heated garage & shop floors

Not included

  • Retrofits into existing floors, reviewed case by case
  • Cooling, which needs ductwork or mini splits
  • The slab & the building, which All Under One Roof handles

Common questions

Is radiant floor heating a good choice in Kansas City?

For slab on grade homes, shops & barndominiums, often yes: even heat at floor level through cold winters. It heats but does not cool, so a separate cooling system is part of the plan.

Does radiant floor heating cool the house?

No. Cooling a floor risks condensation, so cooling comes from ductwork with an air handler or from mini splits.

Can geothermal heat a radiant floor?

A geothermal system can heat a radiant floor through a water to water heat pump, because radiant floors run on moderate water temperatures. Whether that suits a building is decided in the design.

What is a radiant manifold?

The manifold is where the supply & return lines for each tubing loop meet, with valves to balance & shut off each zone. It sits in an accessible spot, usually a mechanical room or a wall cabinet.

Does GeothermalKC pour the slab?

No. The slab & the building are built by All Under One Roof, the design build firm under the same ownership. GeothermalKC plans & installs the radiant tubing before the pour, & the manifold & heat source after it.
