Heating & cooling · Replacement & retrofit

HVAC replacement & retrofits in Kansas City.

Replacing broken or aging heating & cooling equipment is the moment to check whether the old system was the right one. GeothermalKC replaces furnaces, air conditioners & heat pumps, & retrofits houses to heat pumps, mini splits or geothermal where that suits the building.

Replacement or retrofit?

A replacement keeps the same kind of system with new equipment, sized to the house as it is now, with indoor & outdoor parts designed to work together.

A retrofit changes the kind of system: a furnace & air conditioner becomes a heat pump, a boiler heated house gains mini splits for cooling, or any of these moves to geothermal. Additions, finished basements, new windows & insulation since the old system went in all change what the house needs.

HVAC & plumbing work is contracted & licensed through GeothermalKC, for homes & new buildings across the Kansas City metro & surrounding counties.

What a replacement includes

  • Evaluation of the equipment, ductwork & electrical service
  • Equipment sized to the house as it is now
  • Matched indoor & outdoor components
  • Duct supply & return changes where airflow needs them
  • Thermostat & controls
  • Removal of the old equipment
  • Start up & a walkthrough of the new system

What comes next

Considering geothermal?

A replacement is the natural time to evaluate geothermal for the same house.

How a replacement runs

  1. Consultation request

The age & type of the current system, its problems & photos of the equipment.

  2. Evaluation

The equipment, ductwork, electrical service & the house are checked.

  3. Options & proposal

Replacement & retrofit options are compared, with a written scope & price.

  4. Installation

The old equipment comes out & the new system goes in.

  5. Start up

The system is started, checked & explained.

Typical projects & exclusions

Typical projects

  • Furnaces, air conditioners & heat pumps near the end of their life
  • Houses changed by additions, finished basements or new windows
  • Boiler heated houses adding cooling

Not included

  • Commercial systems that need a stamped mechanical design, until the design is in hand
  • Electrical work outside the project proposal

Common questions

Should a new system be bigger than the old one?

Not automatically. The size of the old equipment says little about what the house needs now; additions, insulation, windows & ductwork all change it. The new system is sized to the house as it is today.

Can a furnace & air conditioner be replaced with a heat pump?

Often, yes. A heat pump heats & cools with one outdoor unit, & the ductwork & electrical service are checked first. For the coldest weather, backup heat or a dual fuel setup with a furnace may be part of the design.

Why does an air conditioner freeze up?

Common causes are a clogged filter, closed or blocked vents & returns, a failing blower, a dirty coil or low refrigerant. The first step is to switch cooling off & let the coil thaw, then replace a dirty filter. If it freezes again, the cause needs a diagnosis, & on older equipment that is often when replacement is weighed.

Can geothermal replace a furnace & air conditioner?

Yes, where the lot has room for a ground loop & the ductwork suits a geothermal heat pump. The geothermal replacement & retrofit page covers how that is evaluated.
