Water pressure, quality & smell

High water pressure strains fixtures, valves & water heaters; low pressure makes showers weak. A pressure test shows which, & a pressure reducing valve & an expansion tank are the usual fixes for high pressure.

Hard water leaves scale in water heaters & on fixtures, & a rotten egg smell in hot water only often comes from a reaction inside the water heater tank. Testing comes first, then the filtration, softener or water heater change the water actually needs.

Common questions

Is GeothermalKC a licensed plumbing contractor?

Yes. Plumbing work is contracted & licensed through GeothermalKC, & permits are pulled where the city or county requires them.

What water pressure is normal for a house?

Plumbing codes commonly cap household pressure at 80 psi, & most homes run comfortably below that. Pressure above it calls for a pressure reducing valve.

Why does hot water smell like rotten eggs?

When the smell is in hot water only, it often comes from a reaction between the water heater's anode rod & bacteria in the tank; replacing the anode & disinfecting the tank usually solves it. When it is in hot & cold water, the source water or a dry drain trap is more likely.

How can pipes be kept from freezing?

Insulate exposed pipes, seal drafts near them, keep garage doors closed, open cabinet doors on outside walls, let a faucet drip in extreme cold & disconnect garden hoses before the first freeze.

Does GeothermalKC install water softeners?

Yes, after testing. Softeners & whole house filters are chosen for what the test shows, so the equipment matches the water.
