Heating & cooling · Mini splits

Ductless mini split installation in Kansas City.

A mini split heats & cools one space, or several, without ductwork. GeothermalKC installs ductless systems for detached garages, shops, garage conversions, additions & rooms where ducts are not practical, sized for the space.

Garage & shop heating & cooling

Insulation comes first: an uninsulated garage loses heat nearly as fast as any system can add it, so insulated walls, ceiling & overhead door come before equipment sizing.

Indoor units mount high, clear of overhead doors, lifts & vehicles, & the outdoor unit sits above drifting snow with room for defrost water to drain. In a shop, dust & tall ceilings shape the unit type & the sizing. Electrical requirements & responsibilities are defined in the project proposal.

HVAC & plumbing work is contracted & licensed through GeothermalKC, for homes & new buildings across the Kansas City metro & surrounding counties.

Common questions

Can a mini split heat a garage through a Kansas City winter?

Yes, when the garage is insulated & the system is sized for it. Cold climate heat pumps keep heating at low outdoor temperatures, though output drops in the coldest weather, so the sizing allows for it.

Does a garage need insulation for a mini split?

In practice, yes. Without insulation in the walls, ceiling & overhead door, the heat escapes nearly as fast as the system adds it.

Can the house's furnace heat an attached garage?

Usually not. Residential code generally keeps a house's ducted system from supplying or returning air from a garage, to keep vehicle exhaust out of the living space, so an attached garage usually gets its own equipment.

What maintenance does a mini split need?

Cleaning the indoor unit filters regularly, keeping the outdoor unit clear of leaves & snow, & periodic professional cleaning of the coils & drain.

Does GeothermalKC build the garage?

No. Garages, shops & conversions are designed & built by All Under One Roof, the design build firm under the same ownership. GeothermalKC handles the heating & cooling.
